<<=M=H=O=>> Raj Thackeray and Sena’s old bag of tricks

Raj Thackeray and Sena's
 old bag of tricks
It runs in the blood

The violence across Mumbai
that we witnessed against those from
Uttar Pradesh and Bihar may appear sporadic
as it does now and it may end soon following
which the metropolis will appear normal.
Yet it is a fact
that these were mere acts orchestrated
by ring leaders loyal to the
Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS)
chieftain Raj Thackeray.
And that makes it imperative for the
city police to deal with the guilty
in the same manner as they would with
any petty criminal or thug.
A number of those arrested have been let off
and a few have been enlarged on bail.
This gives cause for concern as such
a casual way of treating the issue is bound to convey
 the impression that the perpetrators
of such criminal acts can get away lightly.
And given the partisan political agenda of
such men like Thackeray,
there is always the danger
of the situation getting out of hand.

It is useful to remember that
Shiv Sena as a political party,
where Raj Thackeray cut his political teeth
managed to grow into a force in Mumbai
and elsewhere in Maharashtra,
only because it was allowed to resort to such
violent means in the early years of its existence.
And it is a fact that the Sena's storm troopers
were allowed to distort some of the basic tenets
of the democratic Constitution in the process
and turn Mumbai, on and off,
into a difficult place for non-Mumbaikars to live.

Raj Thackeray,
doubtless, only treads the path that
his uncle Bal Thackeray had paved in the city
some four decades ago.
That the Sena brand of politics wreaked havoc
to the polity in Mumbai and also sent dangerous
signals to such sectarian platforms elsewhere
has been made several times.
It is necessary to make it once again
in the current context as well.
It goes without saying that the original sin
lay in the failure of the civil administration
as well as the political establishment,
committed to the core values of democracy,
to gather the necessary strength and the political
will to put down such tendencies.

Raj Thackeray's
brand of one upmanship and competitive politics
as he attempts to carve a political space for himself
in a party that is less than two years old
is not a good sign for the
 commercial capital of the country.
It needs to be controlled before the
political decibel level goes up any further.
