[Keralites] Be spam safe

Its irritating to spend the valuable time at office, deleting the spam mails you get everyday. Here are tips do reduce the number of junk mails in your Inbox…..
86% of email messages sent is spam
It's annoying to get over 150 email messages in a day from people you don't even know! Not just annoying, it wastes your time as well. Welcome to the menace that is spam. Spam is essentially unsolicited email. Such messages try to sell something to you, and are mass mailed to thousands of email addresses at a time.

According to recent estimates, almost 86% of all email messages sent is spam – that's a whole lot worse than annoying. It's a very serious problem.

Will we be able to completely eliminate spam from our lives? Looks unlikely, for now at any rate. However, there are some steps that you can take to effectively reduce the amount of spam you get.

1. Never ever reply to a spam message: Replying to it would only confirm your email address to the people who send out the spam, and would eventually lead to you getting more spam. Just delete the spam mail.

2. Maintain privacy: Do not reveal your email address on a public forum or a website, as this is one of the ways in which your email address can be acquired by people who send spam. If you are in the habit of registering your email address, create an ID solely for this purpose. Register only on those sites that you trust.

3. Do not blindly forward messages: When a friend sends you a really hilarious joke, your instant reaction is to forward it a few others, typing away a list of email IDs. Your friend, might have done the same as well.

And in the body of the mail you can see the email IDs of all the people he has forwarded it to. This chain is usually kept up and finally lands in the inbox of a spammer, or even a person who sells it to spammers. Instead of doing a forward and marking all on the To: field, it's better to use the blind carbon copy or Bcc: field. That way you keep the mail ID of the others private. Also delete all the mail IDs you have received as part of the body of the mail.

Many hoax messages are created for this purpose to harvest email IDs. All of us have received messages asking us to forward the mail to 15 people and get lucky in return. Forget luck, all you get is more spam. Do not forward these messages.

4. Do not buy from spam sites: Most spam try to sell you a product. Do not fall into this trap. Most of these offers are scams.

5. Turn on your email filter: Doing this will help you manage your email account to a large extent.

Following these steps may not completely stop you from receiving spam, but it will certainly help reduce it.
