<<=M=H=O=>> BCCI rules the cricket world

BCCI rules the cricket world
No winners in this war

CONTRARY
to the statement from a BCCI official,
there are no winners following
the lifting of racist charges against Harbhajan Singh.
It is a sorry sight indeed
when a bunch of international cricketers
are paraded in front of a sitting High Court judge
 in a federal courthouse.
It must be the first time
too that an internet/ sms joke has been used
in the defence of a sportsperson,
that too retrospectively.
Where was this line of defence
last month at the initial hearing
which dragged
on for hours under the
 supervision of
 ICC Match Referee Mike Procter
following the second Test at Sydney?

All this leads to the suspicion that
Harbhajan did indeed use a racial slur
 against Andrew Symonds.
And
to portray him as a naïve Punjabi lad
who used a Hindi 'gaali' after being
provoked by Symonds is ludicrous.
The Indian off-spinner can thank his lucky stars
that the stump mike did not pick up
his initial words.
That is the loophole that got him off the hook.
Symonds
(who is of mixed race)
has stated that off-spinner used
the same slur against him in India
following which they came to a gentleman's
agreement never to use it again.
Besides,
Harbhajan has a history of using abuse
on the cricket field and has been penalised
on four previous occasions.
To portray him as an innocent victim of
a cultural misunderstanding
therefore just does not hold up.
On the other hand,
the Australians have for years been
using 'mental disintegration'
a convenient euphemism for abuse
and all this has now gotten out of hand.

The BCCI are no doubt busy gloating.
However, their arm-twisting and blackmail tactics
show they consider themselves above
ICC regulations of which they are a party.
Of course
"money talks"
as one anonymous and bitter Australian cricketer
has been quoted in the Australian media.
This too has a ring of hypocrisy about it.
 The Australians,
including some of their retired stars,
are queuing up to grab their share of riches
from the BCCI's multi-billion dollar baby,
 the Indian Premier League
to be staged later this year.
And
Brett Lee has made more money
from product endorsements and sundry other
commercial activities in India
than he could ever earn in his native land.
The fact that the Indian market generates
70 per cent of revenue for world cricket
gives it massive influence in these matters.
That is the reality and if Australia's cricketers
resent this fact,
they are welcome to take
a moral stand and stay away from India in future.
