How to Encrypt Offline Files

Microsoft Windows XP provides many enhancements in the area of data protection—especially Encrypting File System (EFS). This article describes how to encrypt offline files and is intended to assist system architects and administrators in developing best practices for creating data recovery and data protection strategies using Windows XP.
Encrypting Offline Files Windows 2000 introduced the capability to cache offline files (also known as client-side caching [CSC]). This IntelliMirror™ management technology allows network users to access files on network shares, even when the client computer is disconnected from the network.
For example, when a mobile user views the share while disconnected, he or she can still browse, read, and edit files, because the files have been cached on the client computer. When the user later connects to the server, the system reconciles the changes with the server.
The Windows XP client now enables offline files and folders to be encrypted using the Encrypting File System. This feature is especially attractive for traveling professionals that need to work offline periodically while maintaining the security of their data.
A common database A common database on the local machine is used to store all user files and to limit access to those files through explicit access control lists (ACLs). The database displays the files to the user in a manner that hides the database structure and format and appears as a normal folder to the user. Other user files and folders are not shown, and are not available to other users. When the offline files are encrypted, the entire database is encrypted using an EFS machine certificate. Individual files and folders may not be selected for decryption. Therefore, the entire offline files database is protected by default from attacks using the native EFS when this feature is enabled.
One limitation One limitation of the encrypted offline files database is that files and folders will not be shown as an alternate color to the user when working offline. The remote server may also be using encryption of files and folders selectively when online, so this may appear as an inconsistency to the user when displaying encrypted files online and offline.
Important The CSC runs as a SYSTEM process and therefore may be accessed by any user or process that may run as SYSTEM or act as a SYSTEM process. This includes administrators on the local machine. Therefore, when sensitive data is stored in offline folders, administrative access should be restricted to users and SYSKEY should always be used to thwart offline attacks.
To encrypt offline files Encrypted offline files is enabled by setting folder options which can be found in Windows Explorer by selecting Tools and then Folder Options in the command menu.
Note This option is only available in Windows XP Professional.
Select the Offline Files tab as shown below.
Selecting the Offline Files tab
Select Enable Offline Files and Encrypt offline files to secure data.
Click OK.
Offline files will be encrypted when cached locally using a private key and certificate for the user on the client machine.
Important Never encrypt files that are stored in a roaming user profile as the system will not be able to open the files in the profile when it is loaded at logon

We may soon be headed for a time when laptops, mobiles, and mobile devices no longer suffice to make us feel 'sufficiently mobile'.
Possibly such a premonition might have led one Andy Fagg from the Computer Science faculty at the University of Massachusetts to embark on his mission of developing a 'wearable computer'.

For instance, if you happen to enter a conference room, the computer you're wearing should be able to figure out that you're going for a meeting, and accordingly pull-out appropriate documents, including minutes of the last meeting and related discussions, explained Fagg.
The other example he cited was that of the computer being able to recognize that you're going to cook a certain something for dinner, and being able to know exactly what's in stock in your kitchen cabinet, so that a call may be taken on what else is required, which the computer could then remind you to purchase from your friendly grocery store -- of course when you're passing by it.

Dear Friends,..
Im facing too much pain and trauma in my Life. Guys you can only help
me..
Im in 32 ,and entered to family life 2 yr before and having a kid. For
my family and friends im a role model charactor,a lucky person,lovely
husband and father... but only I know the real truth and real face of
mine..im disclosing with keralites.
I have a bad tooo bad habit..Take it like wild sex..yes wild
sex..started in my tender age of 12..hunger of sex.. i need sex
always..every day..anytime..wife or anybody..iim ready to do sex..still
im doing..Where ever i go im searching for sex partner..and easily im
getting that without any hesitation and without loosing money.
But now this habit disturbing in my professional growth...im just

Bhutto party accuses govt Ghinwa Bhutto, sister-in-law of Benazir Bhutto, comforting crying party workers as Bhutto's niece, Fatima (right), sobs at Bhutto's ancestral mausoleum in Garhi Khuda Baksh yesterday ISLAMABAD: Benazir Bhutto's party challenged the Pakistani government's version of the opposition leader's assassination as fresh violence yesterday stoked fears that January 8 elections could be put off.
Al Qaeda-linked militants denied being behind the killing of the 54-year-old former prime minister although the government of nuclear-armed Pakistan, a key US ally in fighting terrorism, had said on Friday it had proof of their involvement.
Bhutto's party dismissed the government account, saying there was no hard evidence and President Pervez Musharraf's embattled administration was trying to cover up its failure to protect her.
In renewed violence, three Bhutto supporters were shot dead. The death toll stood at 44 since her assassination in a gun and bomb attack on Thursday.
A close aide who prepared Bhutto's body for burial dismissed as "ludicrous" a government theory that she died after hitting her head on a sunroof during the suicide attack.
Sherry Rehman, a spokeswoman for Bhutto's Pakistan People's Party (PPP), said Bhutto was shot in the head. But the government stuck to its version, saying Bhutto's party was welcome to exhume her corpse to check.
Pakistanis remained on edge yesterday after protesters torched shops, lorries, welfare centres and ambulances overnight. She was laid to rest on Friday.
Late on Friday, interior ministry spokesman Javed Iqbal Cheema told a news conference: "We have intelligence intercepts indicating that Al Qaeda leader Baitullah Mehsud is behind (Bhutto's) assassination."
However, a spokesman for Mehsud denied the claim.
"I strongly deny it. Tribal people have their own customs.
We don't strike women," Maulvi Omar said by telephone from an undisclosed location.
A PPP spokesman said the government must show hard evidence.
"The government is nervous," he said. "They are trying to cover up their failure" to provide adequate security. – Reuters
